My Teacher’s Tears Made Me a Genius

Life Realities - February 22, 2021

Tolu Oyetoki

The next day, she stormed our class with cain, ‘Koboko’, in her hand, ready to beat hell out of all of us that failed her test.

My early childhood days almost made me a nuisance because of the company that I kept. We all hated our Mathematics teacher and hated Mrs Adeyemo for no other reason than being our Mathematics teacher.

Whenever she entered our class, I zeroed my mind as being absent.

One day, she gave us a test and many of us didn’t do well in her test.

The next day, she stormed our class with cain, ‘Koboko’, in her hand, ready to beat hell out of all of us that failed her test.

The ever smiling Mrs Adeyemo, wore a frowning, sad look.

She called our names one by one and I deliberately arranged myself at the back thinking that by the time she gets to my turn, she would have grown weak. Unfortunately, she singled me out and asked others to go and sit down. “Stretch forth your hand,” she roared and I knew I am done with. I would have preferred being beaten on my buttocks because I mastered how to take lashes. She promised me ten lashes but as she looked into my eyes, she saw that I had become terrified, she shook her head and I saw tears

She promised me ten lashes but as she looked into my eyes, she saw that I had become terrified, she shook her head and I saw tears rolling down her cheeks. That terrified me more, that my teacher shed tears because of my stupidity.

rolling down her cheeks. That terrified me more, that my teacher shed tears because of my stupidity. Just then the Principal who was passing bye entered our class and saw Mrs Adeyemo in tears. He too was scared and asked, “Madam, what happened? Who got on your nerves?” He saw me standing and rushed at me “You idiot, brought tears out of your teachers eyes?” He grabbed the stick to beat me but Mrs Adeyemo begged him not to beat me. She just said “Olaolu, follow me to the staff room!”

Getting to the staff room, My teacher, still shedding tears, ordered me to pull the nearest chair and she asked to sit down. “Why will you allow bad company destroy your brilliant future? I have studied all of you in my class, I saw a genius in you and I hope you will be an award wining student, so why would you destroy that bright future?” All she was saying sounded strange to me, because I never did well in any subject and I was already planning to join my dad in his carpentry work. After a long talk to me she said “Olaolu, change, secure your future. You can go back to your class.” Getting to back to the class, my friends hailed me as the bad boy that made teacher shed tears and I felt high too but later that day, as I was talking to a neighbours older son, who is in the University, his response was different. He asked “Your Maths teacher wept because you failed her subject? Is she your mother? Only a mother would do such a thing.” After saying this he left me, so I began to think. “Only a mother would do such a thing as weeping for a sons failure in exams.” I began to ponder and saw how much Mrs Adeyemo loved me. Next day in class, I changed my seat location and stayed among the ‘Effico’  students that we hitherto mock as being too serious with academics. My friends started hating me for deserting them, but I don’t care. To my surprise, in our third term examination, I had B in all my subjects except Maths where I scored A. One of our teacher, Mr Ojo, whom we call Baba Ojo personally asked if I spied into other script to have passed his subject. He gave me a separate test in his office and again, I scored very high marks. In his surprise he asked “which charm did your parents gave you that turned you a genius all of a sudden?” Unconsciously, I began to shed tears. My heart flashed back at Mrs Adeyemo’s tears and I then appreciated the value of a motherly teacher’s tears.

“Getting to the staff room, My teacher, still shedding tears, ordered me to pull the nearest chair and she asked to sit down. “Why will you allow bad company destroy your brilliant future? I have studied all of you in my class, I saw a genius in you and I hope you will be an award wining student, so why would you destroy that bright future?”

Today, I am a qualified Engineer and though Mrs Adeyemo is no more but her tears was not in vain, May her soul rest in peace.

This is a challenge to teachers to go extra mile over their students and that students should mind the companies they keep.

How ‘Awuf’ Run My Belle

EVENTS, Life Realities - February 8, 2021

Tolu Oyetoki

Bimbo, my bosom friend had often told me about his new guy, Philip and how the guys spoil her silly whenever he took her out.

On this fateful day, she got a call again from Philip who asked her to come to his house, somewhere at the outskirt of Ilorin, after Kufena close, GRA, Kaduna.

Bimbo and I agreed to go together so that in case he wants to make any request for sex, my presence will hinder it. Aside that I also look forward to my own ‘awuf’ which Bimbo had enjoyed all alone.

It was almost thirty minutes on Okada after the Chellarams round about and we had to call Philip to further describe his place. At a point, Bimbo got angry and asked that we go back home but my long throat made me encourage her to let us make the journey. After meandering for a while, we got to the house and we saw this handsome guy, waiting to receive us.

He beamed with smiles as we walked into the main house. I was carried away by the serene environment and the lavished interiors and electronic. He asked us to cook ‘concoction’ rice for him but I insisted on cooking white rice and fried the stew with assorted meat and other ingredients.

We were eating, when a knock landed on the door, it was so hard that we heard it despite the loud music in the sitting room. Philip too could not imagine who it was, he lowered the music and asked “Who is it?” and the response came, “Sea Lords are here.”

Philips mood changed and he hurriedly told Bimbo to run into a room on his left and me to hide under the dining table. I was scared to marrow and asked him if they are thieves but he told me to leave questioning till after they are gone.

I was peeping from under the table and I saw three guys walk in and Philip raised his hand up in cultists manner of greeting. I saw the Capon walk majestically and sat on the three seater directly opposite where I was hiding. Our eyes were four and he pointed a gun at Philip, “Who is there spying on me from under the table?”

Philip quickly replied, “My Queens friend on a visit”, please spare her.” “Come out here”, he ordered me, and I slowly came out like a fish drawn from inside water. He looked at me and said, “Identify yourself!” and I did. I told him my name and he said “Good, you will serve me, I want to taste the sweetness of your honey.” He stretched forward his hand and wanted to torch my breast and I angrily slapped his hand off me. One of his guards gave me a dazzling slap from the back. “Who do you think you are, you want to die cheap?” The capon raised his hand cautioning the guy, saying “She has the gold, let her place value on it, but no matter what, I will taste it. Philip tried to plead, “Boss, she is a ‘lilly pikin’ please, I will give you another chik” but I saw fire on the Capon’s eyes as he said “who you be to drag meat off a Lion’s teeth? Be careful.”

This guy dragged me with my long African braid and he entered into the room by the left, I think, Philip’s elder brother’s room. The Capon hurriedly pulled off my dress not caring if they get torn. He acted like a wild cat. In no time, he became naked and I saw the magnificent interior under him and I freeze. He has no time for fund play like my boy friend does. He hurriedly did me and though its painful, fear could not allow me do other than comply. Few seconds later, he rose up and told me “Philip will give you further instructions but mind you, what you see here, experienced her, went through here, ends here. You tell anyone, you will pay dearly.”

He and his boys left Philips house and I began to cry. I could not even finish my food as I told Bimbo to let us go home. “Awuf’ don run my belle o”

I Trusted him but love failed me

Life Realities - February 1, 2021

Tolu Oyetoki

“I never knew he had another girlfriend. I thought I was the only one. Or perhaps, I not smart enough to discover his slippery nature? I didn’t have any cause to doubt him, so I didn’t.

I was single, had no boyfriend before I started dating this guy. When I started dating him, he was too good to be true. He was too good, it was so unbelievable. He made sure I trusted him. And I did. He always kept his phones with me. He allowed me to pick his phone calls and same with me. My phone can be with him, his too can be with me for days. He didn’t joke with my matter at all. He always wanted to be around me.

I never knew he had another girlfriend. I thought I was the only one. Or perhaps, I not smart enough to discover his slippery nature? I didn’t have any cause to doubt him, so I didn’t.

We dated for two years and I was still dating him when he got married to someone else. When I heard that he got married to another lady, I was berserk. I wondered what I did wrong, or where I got it all wrong, but nothing came to mind.

“We dated for two years and I was still dating him when he got married to someone else. When I heard that he got married to another lady, I was berserk. I wondered what I did wrong, or where I got it all wrong, but nothing came to mind.”

That was when everything that happened between us began to make sense to me that he was just being smart. He never wanted to meet my friends. He always had one excuse or the other whenever I wanted him to meet members of my family. Meehn, this guy was good.

I latter asked him, why he did such a thing to me; guess what he told me.  The lady he married was his mother’s choice

I later found out that he had been dating the girl in an off and on relationship for about 7yrs but broke up for a while. It was when they came back together again that they planned and married each other.

After this experience, I didn’t or couldn’t trust any guy anymore.

Maybe soon, I would date again. But for now, not again, no so soon.
